I have to disagree scouser. I think Malawi are indeed surprise qualifyers for this stage. Just because they have had some success doesn’t mean it isn’t surprising they are still participating. Your rebuttal in your blog post shows all their success coming prior to the 1990s. Thus it is surprising they made it through ahead of a much more fancied DRC. It doesn’t mean Malawi are bad by any stretch as they proved otherwise but it doesn’t make it any less surprising.
When was the last time Egypt made it to the WC? If, yes if, they make it to the WC this time would you call it a surprise? I guess the answer is no. Again, I don’t think Malawi are surprise qualifiers.

Hey Omar,I dont’t think Egypt should make it to the world cup, they just don’t go for the cup…couples of draws and they go back home.
I guarantee you this OMAR,Guinea will be a heck out of them.

Can’t wait to meet your team. Are you ready to be burnt by The Flames of Malawi?
I think Guinea has a strong team. Zayatte’s great season in Hull makes the defense less dependent of an aging Baldé. And there’s plenty of talent up front. But who will take charge of the midfield? Maybe Amara Bangoura? How has Sacko developed since African cup? Sylla is almost a regular in Sivasspor who leads the turkish league and might be the leader in midfield.
I’d love to see this team in World cup!

I wish the two teams a 0-0 draw(for obvious reasons).
Horror first half for the Syli down 2-0. I hope they show some heart in the second half.
It does look bleak for Guinea but don’t give up hope yet! Will be tough though having to get by both Burkina Faso and the Elephants.

Gotta shore up that defense, which has always been Guineas problem…

I hope Guinea will play some of their young players today. A.K. Bangoura, Sakho and Cissé for example. And let Zayatte and Diallo be the leaders of the defense. The Baldé-Feindouno-era is over.

Aboubacar Sidiki Camara, more commonly known as Titi Camara will be tested this Sunday. BTW, has he coached before? Does he have a coaching license? It’s one thing being a great footballer and it’s another thing being a great coach.

No coaching experience for Camara. He should have the respect of his players but whether he knows how the hell to coach a team is anyone’s guess.
I know we’ll beat Malawi but I think it will be a close game. Anyway, beating them 3-0 would be sweat.
Guinea didnt look that exciting against Angola in their recent 0-0 friendly. I think that the Guinea team of 2006 was stronger.
At least Guinea did the job against Malawi.

“Malawi’s shock point at home against Côte d’Ivoire” – Shane
Shock point?
Anyway, Guinea fans should calm down. You win some and you lose some. You can’t win all the time.

Shock point as in surprising point, which it was.

It’s not a shock to us. In fact, we are not happy that we just got a point. We let them off the hook.

Then why did you write a post saying it would need a miracle to win the match? It is a surprising point, doesn’t mean it wasn’t deserved.

Son, here is why I wrote that post ( http://malawi.worldcupblog.org/team-news/malawi-vs-ivory-coast-malawi-will-need-divine-intervention.html ):
“Warfare is the art of deceit. Therefore, when able, seem to be unable; when ready, seem unready; when near-by, seem far away; and when far-away, seem near. If the enemy seeks some advantage, entice him with it…Attack where he is not prepared: go by way of places where it would never occur to him you would go.” – Sun Tzu and The Art of War

I am guinean,I can’t remember the last time we had such a week team, even the ivoirians can’t believe it.
It is pretty obvious that the players don’t care about the national team,it is such a shame to lose to teams like Malawi or Burkina Faso.
Burkina faso was expecting a draw but they had a win, congrat to them and to Malawi(welcome to the african elite and good luck in angola).
Good job on all the reports you’ve done Shane(you did an outstanding job) and SORRY AGAIN on behalf of the whole country of Guinea.

Malawi is aHard nut to Crack at Home? Ask Teams Like DRC, Egypt, Tunisia, Ivorycoast. So Guinea was not an exception, i personally wish Malawi Well in the last decisive game against Burkinafaso. Lets hope they will drew and get apoint, as Malawi winning an away Game is amiracle.Malawians are also praying Day & Night so that Ivorycoast beat Guinea at Home in Abijan.
Minute 35: Ivory Coast 2 Guinea 0
Minute 35: Burkina Faso 0 Malawi 0
End of line for Guinea
Angola here we come.

I am so glad ,as I have been hoping all year long,to see that Guinee(Conakry) will not take part in the World Cup 2010 and the African Cup of Nations.
At least the country will not be distracted in 2010 with propagandas and illusory celebrations.
I wonder if Dadis and his junta led CNDD will call me an “UNPATRIOTIC” citizen and convict me in absentia of treason and rebellion against my beloved Guinee(Conakry).
May the victims of “Lundi 28 Septembre 2009″ Rest in Peace, and may their memory live on forever.

Shane your assessment is well framed considering that no team at this stage is an underdog. You really qualify to be a worlcup analyst. This group is wide open and Ivory Coast should not take it lightly as there will be so many surprises. One thing is for sure I don’t think Ivory Coast will make world cup this time around.Malawi should however be considered dangerous as the will go into this competetion with nothing to prove.Like they did in the last group with Egypt and DR Congo whoever wins the tie with Malawi will win the group. My Pick will be Burkina Faso,Malawi and Ivory Coast with Malawi winning the group win better goal aggregade over Burkina Faso
