When was the last time Egypt made it to the WC? If, yes if, they make it to the WC this time would you call it a surprise? I guess the answer is no. Again, I don't think Malawi are surprise qualifiers.

I have to disagree scouser. I think Malawi are indeed surprise qualifyers for this stage. Just because they have had some success doesn't mean it isn't surprising they are still participating. Your rebuttal in your blog post shows all their success coming prior to the 1990s. Thus it is surprising they made it through ahead of a much more fancied DRC. It doesn't mean Malawi are bad by any stretch as they proved otherwise but it doesn't make it any less surprising.

Shane your assessment is well framed considering that no team at this stage is an underdog. You really qualify to be a worlcup analyst. This group is wide open and Ivory Coast should not take it lightly as there will be so many surprises. One thing is for sure I don't think Ivory Coast will make world cup this time around.Malawi should however be considered dangerous as the will go into this competetion with nothing to prove.Like they did in the last group with Egypt and DR Congo whoever wins the tie with Malawi will win the group. My Pick will be Burkina Faso,Malawi and Ivory Coast with Malawi winning the group win better goal aggregade over Burkina Faso

Not going to be easy at all but Cote d'Ivoire won't win this on reputation alone. You guys are in with a chance but the points against the teams other than Cote d'Ivoire are just as important. Burkina are solid but a full strength Guinea beats them in my view.

I expect and hope that the Elephants will make it out of this group because I think they are the best side but at the same time I enjoy watching Guinea and will not be disappointed if they can somehow pip Cote d'Ivoire. Good luck to you guys.
