A goalkeeping quandary

August 28th, 2008 | By: shane | No Comments »

The Syli Nationale all of the sudden of a big question mark at goalie. Long time keeper and anchor at the back Kémoko Camara has abruptly retired from the national team prior to the recent 2-1 friendly loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Chantilly. The decision came after Camara had featured in all 4 World Cup qualifiers.

In my player profile I said it would be nice for a young keeper to challenge Camara for number 1 keeper spot but was also cognizant of the fact that was not likely to happen. Well now a new keeper will have to step to forefront and take over Camara’s spot. It now seems that the two men who will look to take over the spot are Naby Yattara of RACS Coulliet and locally based Youssouf Toure of Fello Stars.

Whoever wins the job will have a big task in front of them as Guinea has two absolutely vital qualifiers coming up. Not exactly an ideal time for a goalkeeper switch. It will be interesting to see who mans the net against Zimbabwe in the qualifier in early September. Whoever it is will have the comfort of knowing that Zimbabwe’s star striker Benjani is almost certain to miss the clash.
