End of the Line
Guinea’s World Cup qualifying campaign mercifully comes to an end this Saturday as they travel to Côte d’Ivoire to face World Cup finalists out of the group and a side that has had Guinea’s number over the last few years. For Guinea their dreams of a spot in the 2010 Nations Cup are on [...]
National Team in Shambles
Sorry for the lack of updates over the past couple of months. What has transpired in my absence?
The Battle for Angola Part 1
South Africa is now all but out of the picture. That leaves one thing for the Syli Nationale to play for, the 2010 African Cup of Nations in Angola. Their rivals in this battle will be the Flames of Malawi. The next two matches will likely determine who progresses to Angola and [...]
Nouzaret Out, Camara In
Robert Nouzaret resigned following Guinea’s 2-1 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire at home in Conakry. A predictable decision by Nouzaret considering he would have been sacked anyway. Replacing Nouzaret will be Guinean legend Titi Camara, former Liverpool player. Camara will likely have the respect of his new charges and can hopefully ensure that [...]
Côte d’Ivoire Extinguish Guinea’s Dreams of a World Cup
As expected the Syli Nationale failed to defeat Côte d’Ivoire at home, falling 2-1. At first sight not an awful scoreline considering what happened back in Ghana a year and a half ago. But Guinea’s lone goal from Sambegou Bangoura was a result of comical goal keeping.
Last Chance
Guinea’s home match this weekend in Conakry against Cote d’Ivoire is the Syli Nationale’s last chance at salvaging their World Cup hopes. Any thing other than a win and the rest of the campaign will be about ensuring qualification for the Nations Cup in Angola.
World Cup Dreams Squashed in Ouagadougou
Guinea’s hopes of qualifying for a World Cup for the first time in their history came to an end at the hands of Burkina Faso on Saturday after the Stallions ran rampant in a 4-2 win. Yes, it is only one game but it is more than enough to illustrate that the Syli Nationale [...]
Preview: Guinea vs. Burkina Faso
Today Guinea embark upon the final road of qualifiying leading to South Africa when they take on the Stallions of Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou.
Guinea Squad for World Cup Qualifier against Burkina Faso
Here is the squad set to travel to Ouagadougou to face Burkina Faso in the first World Cup qualifier of the final round:
Guinea drawn into Group E
The draw for the final stage of CAF World Cup qualification took place today and the Syli Nationale has been drawn into Group E. Accompanying them on the journey will be Cotê d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Malawi.
Podcast: World Cup 2010 Group B Preview. "You hear that, Mr. Anderson?"
World Cup previews. They can be a bit dull and not particularly helfpul when it comes to predicting who will qualify from each group. One reason for this is that they focus too much on things like players and not enough on the really good things. Like quality of national [read more]
FIFA Has $1 Billion in Reserve Funds, But Still Doesn't Appreciate Clever Advertising
Two bits of news today. Read them both, and then decide for yourself whether the two are related.
The first story is that FIFA made a profit of $196 million in 2009, and now has a reserve cash fund of more than $1 billion. One billion dollars in the vault. Which makes FIFA sound a little like a Bond villain.
The second story is that FIFA have come down hard on South African budget airline kulula.com for what FIFA calls "ambush marketing". Basically, Kulula isn't an official World Cup sponsor, and as such is not allowed to suggest otherwise. Which makes perfect sense. However, Kulula - famous for its slightly left-field advertising campaigns - recently ran an ad in the South African Sunday Times newspaper on February 28th stating the airline was the "Unofficial National Carrier of the You-Know-What". The World Cup 2010 DJ Playlist (Musical Lineup)
(That kid immediately gets some sort of WCB Order of Merit.)
There's going to be a rather large party in South Africa this year. Some call it the World Cup.
But before there can be the real party, there must be another party beforehand. Because it's not really a party unless it's sandwiched by eight other parties of no importance whatsoever. And judging by the musical lineup for the World Cup pre-party, this will be no different. [read more]
FIFA World Cup 2026: Colombia!
There are many things which FIFA isn't very good at. One of them is putting anyone in the organization in front of a microphone, or allowing spilled words onto a page into the hands of the media. Another is running the world's football organization.
So FIFA, after handing this year's World Cup to the country with the second highest per capita murder rate, are looking to outdo themselves by sponsoring a World Cup bid by the world's most dangerous country, Colombia. Hip hip. [read more]
